Nadu Prison Department has begun a drive on Reformation of prisoners and a
number of steps are being initiated for this purpose.
2. Handpicked prison staff will be
trained personally by the Additional Director General of Police/Inspector
General of Prisons Mr.S.K.Dogra, IPS and their
services will be utilized for changing the behavior
of the prisoners. This is no doubt a
challenging task but the successes achieved during the past one year have
enhanced the confidence of the Department.
3. Meanwhile, Mr.
P.Govindarajan, D.I.G. of Prisons, who had been told to study the problem
of suicides in prisons, made a presentation in the conference hall of the
Prisons Headquarters today, 1st June 2012, F.N. In his presentation he identified the major
causes for suicides within prisons and suggested a strategy
for reducing these incidents.
4. Suicides/attempt to suicides
within prisons are a challenging problem for any
Prison Department. Prisoners often
suffer negative feelings like guilt, depression, deprivation and
isolation. Although prison staff
constantly try to identify prisoners known for these feelings, the proportion
between the number of prisoners and the number of warders available to handle
them often results in gaps here and there and makes the system vulnerable.
5. Mr. Govindarajan
analyzed these vulnerabilities and suggested how to
plug the holes.
