Redressal of Grievances :

Board of visitors :

There is a Board of visitors comprising official and non official visitors for each Prison. While, non-official visitors are appointed by the Director General of Police/ Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services on the recommendation of the Collector, the official visitors are the District officials of various Government departments. The visitors can visit the prison periodically and see that the prisoners are treated in accordance with the rules and their security is ensured.

Provision of Complaint Boxes :

The prisoners can ventilate their grievances through the sealed complaint Boxes which are kept in conspicuous places with easy accessibility to prisoners. The complaint boxes are opened by the Principal and District Sessions Judge every month and appropriate action taken on the complaints deposited by the prisoners.

Inspection Procedure :

The Superintendent will conduct a weekly Inspection parade of all prisoners when the Chief Medical Officer, Legal Aid Counsel and all other Prison officers will be present. They will go around the Prison, hear the grievances of the prisoners and redress the same on the spot.

The Deputy Inspector General of Prisons of ranges also make surprise visits and periodical visits to enquire the grievances of the prisoners. Apart from this, an annual inspection is conducted by the Director General of Police/ Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services when he meets all the prisoners and Prison staff, enquires and redresses their grievances. Superintendent of Prisons and Range Deputy Inspector General of Prisons are making quarterly and annual inspection of Sub Jails.

Grievances of Public :

All grievances of public may kindly be put in the public grievance box at Prison gate or sent to the Deputy Inspector General of Prison or Director General of Police/ Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services for necessary action.

Feedback :

If one thinks that there is more that could be done to improve the service, he or she can make suggestions to Superintendent of Prisons or Deputy Inspector General of Prisons or to the Director General of Police/ Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services whose addresses are given in the site. Policy note is given in the site and the Annual Administration Report is also available with Director General of Police/ Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services, Deputy Inspector General of Prisons and Superintendents of Prisons, which will enable one to know more about the custody and treatment of the prisoners and implementation of Government policy.

If one feels that an excellent service has been done by a staff to the public, he may recommend the individual for an award recognizing his excellent public service to the Director General of Police/ Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services, for necessary action. Any good suggestion to improve the administration is also most welcome.
